（1）外在感官特征 绛县柴胡呈圆柱形或长圆锥形。长6～15cm。直径0.3～0.8cm。根头膨大，顶端残留3～15个整基或短纤维状叶基，下部分枝。表面浅棕色，具纵皱纹、支根痕及皮孔。质硬而韧，不易折断，断面显纤维性，皮都浅棕色。木部黄白色。气微香，味微苦。
（2）内在品质指标 绛县柴胡按干燥品计算，含水分≤9.3%(《中国药典》2015年版一部规定含水分应不得超过10.0%)，含柴胡皂苷a（C42H68O13）和柴胡皂苷d（C42H68O13）总量≥0.34%(《中国药典》2015年版一部规定含柴胡皂苷a（C42H68O13）和柴胡皂苷d（C42H68O13）的总量不得少于0.30%)。
（3）安全要求 “绛县柴胡”限定在文件划定的地标地域保护范围内生产，严格执行《中药材生产质量管理规范GAP（试行）》、《中华人民共和国土壤环境质量标准》（GB15618）中二级标准和《生活饮用水卫生标准》（GB5749）等规定，实施柴胡原料生产、贮存及炮制加工过程的科学管理。
