五寨县水系均属黄河流域，有朱家川河、县川河、岚漪河三大水系，全县水资源总量为1.13亿立方米，光照充足、昼夜温差大，符合农作物的生产发育。五寨红芸豆为山西特产，颗粒硕大、色泽鲜红，蛋白质含量高，有很高的营养价值 。2013年，五寨县携手粮食加工企业建立订单生产基地，开展水平沟栽培节水试验;2017年，五寨县红芸豆年种植面积保持在3333公顷以上，年总产8750吨 。
2018年2月12日，原中华人民共和国农业部正式批准对"五寨红芸豆"实施农产品地理标志登记保护 。
